SK Kaken Co., Ltd. was founded in April 1955 as Shikoku Kagaku Kenkyusho (Shikoku Chemical Research Centre) in Osaka. The word “Shikoku” stands for the smallest of the four islands in Japan and the company was named after it, in line with the President’s dream of expanding the business to all the islands. In 2015, the company will celebrate its 60th Anniversary.
At the heart of SK Kaken lies the company’s philosophy to “create something out of nothing”. With its origins in the recycling of solvent (purifying hazardous waste solvent by distillation) and developing water-based architectural coating, the company name was later changed to Shikoku Kaken Kogyo Co., Ltd which sparked a development in sand wall-like coatings and ceramic tile-like coatings that improved construction efficiency.
